'Break the fast'  of several hours of abstinence from food, is what breakfast literally means.

The brain which was at rest during night needs to be rejuvenated and re-energized again in the morning.  Our biological clock works the fastest in the morning and it needs to be supplemented with highly energetic and complex food.

A vital miss :Skipping breakfast due to lack of time can be very dangerous to health. Missing a breakfast  slows down the metabolic rate of our body. Body cells start raiding the stored glucose in the absence of food, followed by hunger pangs during later part of the day. This makes us rely on snacking and over-eating leading to obesity.

Breakfast should be considered as the most important and crucial meal for both growing children and elders.

Significance of breakfast :

  • -Children who eat breakfast are alert, creative, develop concentration and perform well in the school, as compared to the children who don't eat b'fast.
  • -In elders eating a wholesome  breakfast can prevent fatigue, increase concentration, productivity and helps maintain a balanced blood sugar level.

Improvisation on tradition : Indian traditional breakfast dishes are normally high glycemic index food (idlies, rice-dishes) that are high in carbohydrates and low in other essential nutrients. Some are high in oil content like puris, dosas, etc.

The same traditional food can be improvised on nutrition to make it healthy and wholesome. Idlies can be made by mixing  cereals with low glycemic index such as ragi, millets  etc. These  get digested  slowly, thereby releasing sugar and energy at a moderate rate in the bloodstream keeping one satiated for a longer period. Ideal breakfast should include protein, complex carbohydrates, calcium along with fruits.
