Health Bites

'For life is not to live, but to be well.'
I imbibed the genes for healthy living from my doctor father. Many of his golden rules on health and nutrition laid during our childhood are still afresh in mind.
This section is dedicated to articles on health , nutrition and certain lifestyle problems we all face in our fast and mechanized life.
Good health can be easily attained by anyone with right intent, little determination, knowledge and conscious effort.
'You are what you eat.' So start early.....

Health Bites : Eating Right
Take the stairs
People taking escalator to reach the gymnasium next floor, heard this before? Unfortunately this is the modern day's reality we all face.
Active and stress-free life of yesteryears has been replaced with more complex lifestyle full of anxiety, overwork and fatigue.
Natural workouts such as walking, washing and grinding has given way to sophisticated machines, to make our work easy thereby breeding physical inactivity in us.
An Indian's dilemma : "Just by being an Indian can put you up in the bracket of higher risks for heart disease, no matter if you are a vegetarian, a teet-o-taller or a health fanatic!"
"Indians develop diabetics at a very young age, atleast 10 to 15 years earlier than their western counterparts."
The results of a study done by CADI and the diabetic centre, published in an english daily startled me.The study further concluded that " it is in Indian genes that we(Indians) produce more of lipoproteins, the key component in formation of plaque in coronary arteries."
Old habits die hard : Modern India is marching ahead from Chandrayaan to Nano and here we are still clinging to certain age old traditional food habits which have become obsolete in today's world.
People in India follow a very faulty food habit. Our traditional diet is high in carbohydrates, fats and is nutrient deficient. The north and east India starts its day with oil laden parathas, while it is idlies for south Indians which has a low Glycemic Index.
Plight of modernization: Lifestyle of people in India has gone through a tremendous change over the years. Complex, mechanical and sedentary lifestyle has replaced the simple and active one.
Machines and electronic gadgets have substituted our physical work we used to do in earlier days. Consumption of high-sugar food, oil and refined cereals are the order of the day. Stressful work life, erratic food habits and very little physical work has given way to certain life threatening diseases.
Simplifying the complexities :There are many articles splashed in magazines and dailies advocating ways to combat the risks we face in our daily life. Most articles carry a list of scary medical terms and scientific names which look intimidating, making it difficult for an average reader like me to understand and implement.
Triglycerides, Glycemic Index, BMI, Lipo-proteins, Intermediate Density phytochemicals, PUFA, Transfats, free radicals.....to name a few.
Certainly these are some of the unavoidable medical terms which each one of us should be aware of to lead a healthy life.
My attempt is to simplify and write articles on such topics, and make an average person understand the importance of these terms in their life.
These articles are just a simplified version of the notes and cut-outs from my scrap book that I have collected over the years for my personal use.
A word of caution :Since I am not a qualified person to write on the subject ,readers are always advised to consult the experienced and expert practitioners for the same.
Take the stairs :We cannot control our genes but we can control our food habits and lifestyle.
Things do not change, we can. Let us bring the change.
For once let us forget the escalator and take the stairs......
